Herodias is one of the most evil women in the Bible. We don’t have much information about her, but what we have is disturbing! In a nutshell, Herodias was a truth rejecting adulterous woman, who wanted John the Baptist dead more than she wanted half of Herod’s kingdom (Mk. 6:22-28)! She was a hateful and revengeful woman, who wasn’t willing to pay the price for her own forgiveness and salvation, nor did she appreciate the truth of God or the servant of God (John the Baptist), who jeopardized himself to speak the truth. Here are the facts:
For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled ; yet he liked to listen to him. (Mark 6:17-20)
Herodias was still married to Philip though she was divorced and remarried to Herod (Antipas). She was therefore in adultery with Herod. John rebuked their open adultery through that illegitimate marriage and Herodias nursed a grudge to kill John and waited for an opportunity. She actually succeeded and finally got John’s head handed to her on a platter, but that didn’t change her adultery or desperate need for salvation. Queen Herodias is in fiery torment today unless she had a radical change toward God in her life.
